This website is about Australia and Indonesia. There are a lot of things I think more Australians should know about Indonesia, and vice versa. We’re both big countries with big potential, and we’re right next door to each other. We’re neighbours, and like a lot of neighbours in the modern world it would be nice to know each other a bit better than we do. As an Aussie who’s been in a long term relationship with Indonesia since 1993, and currently living in Jakarta, this site will provide a personal take on the relationship. I work as a linguist in a research centre devoted to documenting some of Indonesia’s incredibly rich linguistic diversity so one of the things I will talk about is language. And one of the things most Australians don’t know about Indonesia is that there are over 700 distinct languages spoken throughout the country. (That’s right, different languages, nut just dialects. And they come from quite a large number of different language families – no-one knows exactly how many.) I’m also interested in development issues so this site will discuss politics and economics and a variety of other issues that spark my interest. From one big country to another.
